Product Description

Product Description

Microsoft's MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) program is a rigorous testing and certification program for Windows NT system and network administrators. To achieve certification, one must pass four required exams and two elective exams. Close to twenty potential elective exams exist, although only nine of them are current electives covering the most recent version of a given product. Microsoft has also just introduced the MCSE+Internet certification, which requires passing seven required exams and two elective exams. There are four current elective exams to choose from to attain this certification. MCSE: The Electives in a Nutshell is a comprehensive study guide that covers the most popular and important elective exams for the MCSE, as well as the Internet requirements and electives for the MCSE+Internet. This book is the companion volume to the bestselling MCSE: The Core Exams in a Nutshell. This book covers the following exams: Internetworking with TCP/IP Internet Information Server 4.0 Internet Explorer 4.0 Administration Proxy Server 2.0 Exchange Server 5.5 Each chapter covers one exam. It includes: A summary of the key areas covered by the exam A description of the format, difficulty of each exam and tips for passing it Definitions of key terms Sample test questions and answers MCSE: The Electives in a Nutshell is a detailed quick reference designed for the administrator who already has some experience with Windows NT or is currently administering a different platform such as UNIX, and wants to learn what is necessary to pass the elective exam portion of the MCSE and the MCSE+Internet elective and required exams. While no book is a substitute for real-world experience, this book will help you codify your knowledge and prepare for the exams. Any administrator who is serious about passing the required exams needed to acquire MCSE and MCSE+Internet certification will find this book an invaluable tool.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really handy book, 24 Mar 2000

As a compressed reminder of all the most important facts and concepts it is a really consise and well put together resource.

Although it is very obviously not intended as the "only book you need to pass the exams" I found that for Net Essentials and Workstation it was pretty close.

Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good reference book., 26 Jan 2000

This book alone is not sufficient to gain MCSE accreditation. It's far more useful afterwards, if you need to remember all those finicky Microsoft things that tend to be sieved out of your head once you've passed the exams. Well written - O'Reilly choose their authors well !

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book!, 13 Dec 1999
By A Customer
This whole series is well written, readable and put together in a non-sycophantic manner. They focus on all of Microsoft's 10 MCSE exams in a condensed manner [The Core Exams & The Electives]. They actually point out the difference between how things really are and how MS interpret them. They also contain good examples to work through. The Electives book is more relevant to understanding the Internet being focussed on TCP/IP, MS Internet Information Server, Explorer and Email, is most appropriate. However, I am sure it would be difficult to understand fully without first looking at the Networking Essentials section of The Core Exams book
